Field curvature aberration

Field curvature aberration:

Field curvature aberration occurs when the focal plane is not planar, but on curved image surface. The other name for field curvature aberration is petzval field curvature aberration. It’s the fourth primary seidel aberration.

Optical system with field curvature aberration:

Field curvature aberration free optical system:

Properties of field curvature aberration:

  • Aberration depends on the square of field angle.
  • Affects the sharpness of image similar to that of astigmatism aberration.
